Dresses

A dress without a waist seam that skims the body from the shoulders, with bust darts, an A-line flare, sleeves of any length and a back zip or keyhole.

A fitted bodice joined at the waist to an A-line, gathered or circle skirt: the classic sundress, tea dress or party dress, with sleeves or straps.

A bias-cut dress on thin straps that drapes over the body, with a straight or V neckline, finished with bias binding.
Skirts

A skirt fitted at the waist that flares gently to the hem, with a waistband and zip or a pull-on elastic waist.

A full skirt cut as a full, half or quarter circle that swings from the waist, with a waistband and zip or an elastic waist.

A dirndl or tiered skirt made of gathered rectangles: the easiest skirt to start with, with an elastic waist or a waistband.

A close-fitting straight skirt with darts, a back vent and zip, tapering slightly to the hem.

An A-line skirt whose two fronts cross over and tie at the waist: no zip, adjustable fit.
Tops

A knit T-shirt or tank with a neckband, from fitted to oversized, round, scoop or V neck, sleeveless to long sleeves.

A woven top or blouse: shell, boxy top or puff-sleeve blouse, with darts for shape, a facing at the neck and a back zip, keyhole or front buttons.

A relaxed sweatshirt with ribbed cuffs and hem band, a crew neck or a lined hood, and an optional kangaroo pocket.
