AI pattern maker

An AI sewing pattern generator that drafts real patterns

Describe a garment in words or show Sewly a picture. The AI works out what you want, and a drafting engine draws every piece to your measurements, with seam allowances, a 3D preview and a sewing guide.

Try an example:

Your pictures stay private and are only used to make your pattern.

  1. 1

    Describe it or show it

Type what you want to sew, for example a gathered midi skirt with pockets in cotton poplin, or upload a photo, a screenshot or a link to a public Pinterest pin or Instagram post. The AI understands requests in any language.

  2. 2

Sewly picks the garment and options

The AI chooses the closest garment in Sewly's library and sets its options: length, neckline, sleeves, fullness, closure and pockets. The drafting engine then draws every piece with your measurements and the right ease, and you see the pattern and a 3D preview.

  3. 3

    Fit and adjust

Enter your measurements or pick a standard size. Change options by hand, which is free and instant, or ask for changes in words. Check the result in 3D on a mannequin built from your numbers before you print anything. Changes by hand never count toward your AI allowance.

  4. 4

    Print and sew

Print the pattern at true scale on A4, US Letter, A3, Tabloid, A0 or 36 × 48 in, or as a projector file, and check the test square. Follow the guide step by step. Printing needs a Maker or Atelier plan.

What is an AI sewing pattern generator?

An AI sewing pattern generator turns a description or a picture of a garment into a sewing pattern you can print and sew. Sewly splits the job in two.

The AI understands your request: the garment type, its silhouette, its details and the fabric. A drafting engine then draws the pattern from flat-pattern blocks with your measurements, the way a pattern maker drafts by hand. The result is a set of pieces at true scale, with seam allowances, notches and grainlines, and a sewing guide written for that pattern.

Why the AI does not draw the pattern itself

Image and language models are good at recognizing a garment and describing it, but a pattern is geometry: a sleeve cap has to match its armhole, a waistband has to match the skirt. So in Sewly, the AI never draws lines. It picks the closest garment in the library and sets its options, and the engine drafts it. Same inputs, same pattern, every time.

Read how Sewly drafts a pattern, or how this compares with asking ChatGPT for a pattern.

Ask in words, or change it by hand

Once a pattern exists, you can change it in two ways. Ask in words, such as "make it midi with in-seam pockets" or "puff sleeves instead", and the AI changes the options for you; each request counts as one AI message.

Or change any option or measurement by hand: length, neckline, sleeves, fit, flare. Changes by hand use no AI, redraw the pattern instantly and are free and unlimited on every plan, including the free one.

A sewing guide you can ask questions

Each pattern comes with its own step-by-step guide: the steps of that garment with its options, the pieces list with cut counts, the notions, fabric quantities for 110, 140 and 150 cm (45, 55 and 60 in) wide fabric, and cutting layouts.

When a step is unclear, ask the guide, for example "what does staystitch mean?" or "my fabric is slippery, any tips for this step?". An AI answers about your pattern. See how to ask the guide.

What it can make, and what it cannot yet

Sewly drafts from a library of garment types it knows well: 20 at launch, covering skirts, dresses, tops, sweatshirts, trousers and shorts, a kimono jacket, bags, a hat and home pieces, each with its own options. It picks the closest one for your request.

It does not yet draft tailored jackets, coats, jeans with a fly front, shirts with collar stands, lingerie or swimwear, and it says so rather than inventing a pattern. Browse the pattern library to see every garment and its options.

Free to try, paid to print

The free plan includes 3 AI patterns and 20 AI messages a month, unlimited changes by hand, the 3D preview and the sewing guide on screen.

Maker ($7.99 a month or $59 a year) adds printing on every paper size, the PDF sewing guide, 30 AI patterns and 300 AI messages a month. Atelier ($14.99 a month or $119 a year) makes AI use unlimited, within fair use. Details are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI sewing pattern generator?

Sewly's free plan includes 3 AI patterns and 20 AI messages a month, unlimited changes by hand, the 3D preview and the sewing guide on screen. Printing needs a Maker plan ($7.99 a month or $59 a year) or an Atelier plan.

How is this different from asking ChatGPT for a sewing pattern?

A general chatbot can explain techniques and describe how a garment is made, but it does not draft pattern pieces to scale from your measurements. Sewly's AI understands the request and its drafting engine draws the pieces, so they print at true scale and fit together. Sewly also works inside ChatGPT: see Sewly for ChatGPT.

Can it generate any garment?

No. It drafts the 20 garment types in its library, with their options, and picks the closest one for your request. Tailored jackets, coats, jeans with a fly front, shirts with collar stands, lingerie and swimwear are not available yet.

Are AI-generated patterns accurate enough to sew?

Sewly's patterns are drafted by its engine from flat-pattern blocks with your measurements and ease, not drawn by the AI. They include seam allowances (1.5 cm or 5/8 in on wovens, 1 cm or 3/8 in on knits by default) and print at true scale, with a 5 cm and 2 in test square to check.

Which languages does it understand?

The site and the app are in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch, and the AI understands requests in any language.
