Make sewing patterns inside ChatGPT
Sewly works inside ChatGPT as an app: send ChatGPT a photo link or describe the garment with your measurements, and Sewly drafts the pattern, shows it in the chat and gives you the printable PDF.
- 1
Add Sewly to ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT's settings and add Sewly as an app or custom connector with the server URL https://sewly.app/api/mcp, if it is not yet listed in the app directory. Our setup guide for ChatGPT and Claude has the current steps. You only do this once.
- 2
Ask for a pattern
In a chat, send a photo link (a public Pinterest pin, Instagram post or shop page) or describe the garment, and add your measurements or a standard size. For clothes, height, bust, waist and hip are enough to start. Mention the length and fabric you have in mind if you know them.
- 3
See it and refine it
Sewly drafts the pattern and shows it in the chat. Ask ChatGPT for changes, such as a longer length, a different neckline or pockets, and Sewly redraws it. You can ask sewing questions in the same conversation. Each change goes through Sewly's drafting engine, so the pieces stay to scale.
- 4
Print and sew
Open the printable PDF from the link Sewly gives you, print it at true scale on A4, US Letter, a copy shop size or for a projector, and check the test square. Then follow the step-by-step sewing guide. Printing needs a Maker or Atelier plan.
What does the Sewly app for ChatGPT do?
Sewly works inside ChatGPT and Claude as an app (an MCP server): send the assistant a photo link or describe the garment with your measurements, and Sewly drafts the pattern, shows it in the chat and gives you the printable PDF.
ChatGPT handles the conversation; Sewly's drafting engine draws the pattern pieces to scale, from flat-pattern blocks and your numbers. You get the same pattern you would get on sewly.app, without leaving the chat.

What to ask ChatGPT
Be specific about the garment and your size. For example:
- "Make me a sewing pattern for the skirt in this pin", followed by the link, and "waist 72 cm, hip 98 cm, knee length".
- "A boxy linen top with elbow sleeves and a back keyhole, women's EU 40."
- "Pull-on wide-leg trousers with pockets: height 168 cm, waist 76 cm, hip 102 cm."
Then ask for changes in the same conversation, such as "make it midi" or "add in-seam pockets", or ask which fabric to buy.
ChatGPT on its own, and with Sewly
On its own, ChatGPT is good at explaining techniques, planning a project and answering sewing questions, but it does not draft pattern pieces to scale from your measurements. With Sewly connected, it asks Sewly to draft the pattern, then shows you the result and the PDF link.
Our post on sewing with ChatGPT looks at what each does well, and Sewly vs asking ChatGPT compares them in detail.

How to add Sewly to ChatGPT
Sewly is an MCP server at https://sewly.app/api/mcp, built on the standard that ChatGPT apps use. Until Sewly appears in ChatGPT's app directory, you can add it as a custom app or connector with that URL, wherever your ChatGPT plan allows custom connectors.
ChatGPT's settings change from time to time, so our guide to using Sewly in ChatGPT and Claude keeps the current steps up to date.
Plans and printing
Sewly's plans are the same everywhere. On the free plan you can make 3 AI patterns and send 20 AI messages a month, change options and measurements without limit, and read the sewing guide on screen.
Printing the PDF needs Maker ($7.99 a month or $59 a year) or Atelier ($14.99 a month or $119 a year), which also include the sewing guide as a PDF. Sewly also works in Claude: see the Claude connector.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sewly in the ChatGPT app directory?
Sewly is built as a ChatGPT app on MCP. Until it is listed in the directory, you can add it with its server URL, https://sewly.app/api/mcp, wherever your ChatGPT plan allows custom apps. The setup guide has the current steps.
Can I send a photo from my phone?
The most reliable way in ChatGPT is a link to the picture, such as a public Pinterest pin, Instagram post or shop page, or a description in words. To work from a photo saved on your device, you can also upload it on sewly.app, which accepts photos and screenshots directly.
How much does Sewly cost in ChatGPT?
The same as on sewly.app. The free plan includes 3 AI patterns and 20 AI messages a month and unlimited changes by hand; printing needs Maker ($7.99 a month or $59 a year) or Atelier ($14.99 a month or $119 a year).
Which garments can Sewly draft in ChatGPT?
The same 20 garment types as on sewly.app: skirts, dresses, tops, sweatshirts, trousers and shorts, a kimono jacket, bags, a bucket hat and home pieces. It does not yet draft tailored jackets, coats, jeans with a fly front, lingerie or swimwear.
Does Sewly work in Claude too?
Yes. It is the same MCP server, added to Claude as a custom connector. See Sewly for Claude.
What will you sew next?
Bring the picture. Sewly brings the pattern.
Your pictures stay private and are only used to make your pattern.
