Sewly works inside ChatGPT and Claude as an app, also called a connector, built on an MCP server at https://sewly.app/api/mcp. Add it once with that URL, sign in with your Sewly account, then ask for a pattern in the chat with a link to a photo or a description of the garment. Sewly drafts the pattern to your measurements or a standard size, shows it in the conversation as a pattern card and gives you a link to the printable PDF; printing needs a paid Sewly plan.
What Sewly does inside a chat
- You ask in your own words, in any language. When you ask for a pattern, the assistant sends Sewly your link or description and your measurements or size.
- Sewly drafts, it does not guess. As in the app, the AI recognizes the garment and picks the closest type from Sewly's library with its options: length, neckline, sleeves, fullness, closure, pockets. Sewly's drafting engine then draws every piece from flat-pattern blocks with your measurements and the right ease. The same inputs always give the same pattern.
- You get a pattern card and a PDF link. The pattern appears in the conversation, with a link to the PDF at true scale and its sewing guide.
- Your Sewly plan applies. You sign in with your own Sewly account, so your plan's monthly AI patterns and AI messages are the ones used, and printing needs the Maker or Atelier plan.
What you need
- A Sewly account. The free plan is enough to make patterns; printing needs a paid plan.
- ChatGPT or Claude on a plan that lets you add custom connectors or apps. In work and school accounts, an administrator may need to allow them.
- Your height, bust, waist and hip measurements, or a standard size: women EU 32 to 54 (US 0 to 22, UK 4 to 26), men XS to 3XL, children 2 to 14 years. If you have not measured yet, see how to take your body measurements.
How to add Sewly to Claude
- In recent versions of Claude, open Settings → Connectors.
- Choose to add a custom connector.
- Name it Sewly and paste the server URL:
https://sewly.app/api/mcp. - Connect it. A Sewly sign-in page opens: sign in, or create a free account, and allow access.
- In a conversation, open the tools or connectors menu and check that Sewly is turned on.
The Sewly connector page for Claude keeps these steps up to date.
How to add Sewly to ChatGPT
- In recent versions of ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps (called Connectors in some versions).
- Choose to add or create an app from a URL. Some plans ask you to turn on an advanced or developer setting before custom apps can be added.
- Name it Sewly and paste
https://sewly.app/api/mcp. If the form asks how to authenticate, keep the sign-in (OAuth) option. - Sign in with your Sewly account when the window opens, and allow access.
- In a chat, pick Sewly from the tools or apps menu, or name it in your request.
The Sewly app page for ChatGPT has the latest details.
Note: Menus in ChatGPT and Claude change often. If the names differ, look for the place where you manage connectors or apps: Sewly only needs its URL and your Sewly sign-in.
How to ask for a pattern
- Say what you want and where it comes from. Paste a link to a public Pinterest pin, Instagram post or shop page, or describe the garment: type, length, neckline, sleeves, closure, pockets. Starting from a pin? See turning a Pinterest pin into a pattern.
- Give your measurements or a size. Height, bust, waist and hip are enough to start; Sewly fills in the rest from the nearest size. Say whether your numbers are in centimeters or inches.
- Mention the fabric if you know it. Woven or knit changes the ease and the seam allowances.
- Ask for Sewly by name if the assistant starts writing instructions itself: "Use Sewly to draft this pattern."
- Check the pattern card, then ask for changes in words: "make it midi", "add in-seam pockets", "change to a V-neck".
- Open the PDF link to print at true scale on A4, US Letter, A3, Tabloid, A0 or 36 × 48 in copy-shop paper, or as a projector file.
Some requests that work well:
- "Here is a dress I love on Pinterest: (paste the link). Make the pattern with Sewly in EU size 40."
- "Use Sewly to draft a relaxed linen shift dress, knee length, short sleeves, with in-seam pockets. Height 165 cm, bust 90 cm, waist 72 cm, hip 98 cm."
- "Make a bucket hat pattern with Sewly for a 57 cm head."
- "With Sewly, draft a lined tote bag 40 cm wide with boxed corners and an inner pocket."
Why not ask the assistant for a pattern directly?
On their own, chat assistants can explain techniques and suggest measurements, but they do not draw pattern pieces to scale that you can print and cut. Sewly does that part: pieces drafted from flat-pattern blocks, seam allowances included, a tiled PDF with a 5 cm and 2 in test square. There is a fair comparison in asking ChatGPT for a sewing pattern.
What Sewly can draft
Sewly drafts 20 garment types at launch: skirts (A-line, circle, gathered and tiered, pencil, wrap), tops (T-shirt and tank, woven top or blouse, sweatshirt and hoodie), dresses (shift, fit-and-flare, slip), pull-on trousers and shorts, a kimono jacket, and accessories and home pieces (tote bag, zip pouch, bucket hat, scrunchie, cushion cover, apron). It does not yet draft tailored jackets with collars and lapels, coats, jeans with a fly front, shirts with collar stands, lingerie or swimwear; for those, it picks the closest garment it knows.
The Sewly app at app.sewly.app also gives you direct photo and screenshot uploads, the guided measuring assistant, the 3D preview on a mannequin built from your measurements, and free, unlimited changes by hand to every option and measurement.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sewly does not appear in the chat | Check that it is turned on for this conversation, or start a new chat after adding it |
| The assistant writes a pattern itself | Ask explicitly: "Use Sewly to draft this pattern" |
| It keeps asking you to sign in | Disconnect the connector, connect it again and sign in with your Sewly account |
| The link cannot be read | The pin may be private, or Instagram may hide the picture: describe the garment, or upload a screenshot in the Sewly app |
| The PDF asks you to upgrade | Printing needs Maker ($7.99 a month or $59 a year) or Atelier ($14.99 a month or $119 a year) |
| You reached a monthly limit | The free plan includes 3 AI patterns and 20 AI messages a month, Maker 30 and 300, Atelier unlimited (fair use) |
